Signs your dryer vent needs cleaning
Vent problems usually show up long before a fire. Here is what to watch for.
Clothes take more than one cycle
Restricted airflow keeps moisture in the dryer, so loads come out damp.
The dryer or laundry room is very hot
Heat that can't leave through the vent builds up in the machine and the room.
A burning smell
Lint heating up against hot parts smells like something burning.
Lint around the dryer
Lint on the floor, on top of the washer, or leaking from the back of the dryer.
Weak air at the outside vent
Run the dryer and hold your hand at the outside vent. Little or no air means a blockage.
Nests or debris at the vent hood
Birds and animals nest in outside vents. The flap may not open all the way.
A musty smell or damp laundry room
Moist air that can't leave through the vent can leave the room humid and musty.
The dryer shuts off mid-cycle
Many dryers shut down when they overheat, which a blocked vent can cause.
If you smell burning
Stop the dryer and unplug it, then call us. Do not run it again until the vent has been checked.
If you see smoke or flames, get everyone out of the house and call 911.
How often to clean
At least once a year. Large households, heavy laundry loads, pets and long vent runs may need it every six months. If it has been a year or more since the last cleaning, it's time.

Open the flap on your outside vent hood. If you see straw, feathers or packed lint, the exhaust path is blocked. A nest like this one stops air from leaving the vent.
If you see something like this, don't push anything into the vent. Call us and we'll clear it.
